Bacchanalia

March 12th - March 23rd, 2012

1508 London, London

Bacchanalia is a contemporary commentary on the experience and rituals surrounding eating and drinking. This exhibition will be realized through an installation of design and artwork derived from the uses and forms of tableware and glassware. More than just tools to facilitate consumption, these design and art objects are infused with memories, cultural connotations and symbolic values. The selected work will challenge the viewers’ perceptions of the objects by playing with the familiar connotations associated with tableware and inverting the meaning.

The exhibition explores these themes through objects, artistic installations and artwork as well as a special evening of food performances. Works include ceramic designer Peter Ting’s conceptual installation of an elaborate table setting with his own work. Mimi Joung, Ingrid Murphy and Lesley Stothers explore ritual and memories associated with tea cups in distinctively different ways. Graphic designer, Cecilia Levy’s pairing of books with tea cups highlights the archaic aspect of these objects.

The true experience of the project will be realized the evening of March 14th with an exploration of the show through food and drink. In response to the artwork, a series of food performances and installations will be presented for everyone to enjoy!
